Are You Having a Blue Holiday?

Are You Having a Blue Holiday?

The holidays are often portrayed as joyful, busy, and full of togetherness. But for many people, this season can feel heavy, lonely, or overwhelming. If you are finding yourself feeling more stressed, sad, or emotionally drained than festive, you are not alone.

A “blue holiday” can show up in many ways. It might be grief over someone who is no longer here, financial pressure, strained family relationships, work stress, health concerns, or simply the exhaustion of trying to meet expectations that do not feel realistic right now. For some, the shorter days and colder weather can also impact mood and energy levels.

Whatever the reason, struggling during the holidays does not mean you are doing anything wrong.

Signs You Might Be Experiencing a Blue Holiday

You may notice:

  • Feeling more irritable, sad, or anxious than usual
  • Loss of motivation or interest in activities you normally enjoy
  • Difficulty sleeping or changes in appetite
  • Feeling isolated even when surrounded by others
  • A sense of pressure to “fake” happiness for the sake of others

These feelings are common and valid, especially during a season that carries so many emotional layers.

Giving Yourself Permission to Feel

One of the hardest parts of a blue holiday is the belief that you should feel grateful or happy simply because it is the holidays. In reality, emotions do not follow a calendar. Giving yourself permission to acknowledge how you truly feel can be an important first step toward taking care of yourself.

It is okay to set boundaries.

It is okay to simplify traditions.

It is okay to say no to events that feel draining.

Small acts of self-compassion can make a meaningful difference.

You Do Not Have to Carry This Alone

If the holidays feel especially heavy, support is available. Talking with a counselor can help you process emotions, develop coping strategies, and find ways to navigate this season with more balance and support.

Your Members Assistance Program is a confidential resource for members, their eligible dependents, and retirees. Services may include short term counseling, referrals, and support for stress, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship concerns, and more. Reaching out does not mean something is wrong with you. It means you are taking care of yourself.

A Gentle Reminder

The holidays do not have to be perfect to be meaningful. If this season feels blue, know that you are not alone and help is available. Sometimes the most important gift you can give yourself is support.
