The Dental Checkup
Chapter 7. You & Your Dentist

Overall health includes proper dental care and good oral hygiene. A family dentist who is knowledgeable and prevention oriented is a valued part of everyone's health care team.

A proper dental checkup should include these things:
A visual check of the soft tissues (tongue, cheek, throat, and gums) for redness and puffiness, or white discoloration
A check of the bite and jaw joints
Measuring any pockets which may have developed between the teeth and the gums. (This is a check for gum [periodontal] problems.)
A full set of X-rays (if they haven't been taken recently)
Asking the patient about any areas of concern
